WHO IS DOING WHAT IN OPEN RAN, HOW MANY COMMERCIAL NETWORKS ARE THERE AND AT WHAT SCALE?

The open radio access network (Open RAN) movement has accelerated at a faster pace than expected, with Open RAN revenue now on track to approach 6% to 10% of the overall proprietary and Open RAN market in 2023, according to latest predictions from Dell’Oro Group.

At the same time, Stefan Pongratz, vice president and analyst at Dell’Oro, noted that Open RAN encompasses a variety of technologies and architectures, “and as a result, implementations and definitions/ scope will vary widely”.

“Still, keeping this in mind, it is clear that the operators in the United States and Japan are now driving the deployments in this initial early adopter phase,” Pongratz said. “The European operators have been more cautious with Open RAN, focusing on building out 5G using proprietary RAN.”
