The MWC debate: AI in the network

Hear how operators are applying AI technologies to address the challenges of growing network complexity, and to create a better experience for their customers.

Networks are becoming increasingly complex, with different use cases having different QoS requirements, and different type of devices and network functions producing different types of data at different periodicity. In this environment, the role of AI, cloud, and automation has become crucial in the operation of networks.

In this debate we learn:

  • What operators want from AI
  • How they are deploying
  • The challenges they face
  • The benefits to the customer
  • AI’s future in telco

We hear from:

  • Tore Kristoffersen, VP Network Production, ICE Norway
  • Dimitris Mavrakis, Senior Research Director, ABI Research
  • Brandon Larson, SVP and GM of Cloud, AI & IMS Business Strategy, Mavenir

KEY QUOTES:

Tore Kristoffersen:
“It all starts from a customer point of view. Networks are getting more complex and customer expectations are huge. So we need to make fast decisions to meet customer expectations. And to do that we need a very data- and software-centric approach as to how we organise the architecture.”

“It will give us a competitive edge and what we can do is make sure we have the right architecture, the right partner, and then start using AI models as we go with everything we do within the network – to save cost and to be able to do more for the customer.”

Dimitris Mavrakis:
“There is a lot of opportunity. The key differentiator telcos have is that they only use a fraction of the data they have access to. Every sector is trying to use data, and telcos have a lot of data which can be used in a compliant manner to train models. I think that can be a model to push them forward.”

“There’s a lot of innovation from the IT industry, AI and hyperscalers. It’s not a new fad or a new trend. Automation and AI are a fundamental part of teclo operations – so everyone needs a solid AI strategy.”

Brandon Larson:
“AI is more of a capability than a technology. The capability is applying data science and AI technologies to solve specific problems.”

“We’re not going to put GPUs everywhere in the network. We have to put trained AI models on the real estate available.”

“There’s a lot of problems that can be solved with AI because every problem in telco revolves around data. The operators that lean forward and embrace it are going to have the competitive edge, no doubt about that.”
