The standardisation of the integration of cellular networks with satellite communications has created a new dynamic in the mobile network industry.
That dynamic is being pushed forward by massive investment in a number of new companies launching low earth orbit satellite constellations, with one aim being the ability to provide services direct to cellular devices over a satellite connection.
Existing satellite companies are responding by aligning their own NTN services for cellular, read 3GPP, connectivity.
Mobile operators are racing to establish first or fast second mover advantage, partnering either with one of the new players, or getting to market with a more limited range of services with the established geostationary orbit players.
A further dynamic is the drive by technology innovators to solve the technical challenges that NTN creates, for both low and high earth orbits. Part of this includes the ability to test performance and hardware before things are sent into space, a key part of reducing time to market and operational cost.
