Viavi Solutions has said that it is driving forward work on AI-RAN development in a number ways, including its technology leadership and heading up key AI-RAN Alliance working groups.
In an interview with TMN for its AI-RAN Market Update 2025, Owen O’Donnell, TeraVM Marketing Manager, Viavi Solutions, said that the company was supporting companies to develop AI-enhanced RAN use cases in a number of ways.
Its VALOR Lab, which is funded by the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund (PWSCIF), is also now the first accredited AI-RAN Alliance lab.
O’Donnell added that Viavi’s AI-RAN Scenario Generator is proving itself to be a really strong tool to enable the development of AI-RAN, enabling developers to simulate real-world traffic and data and, using this data, to mimic real-world radio characteristics within which to conduct controlled, repeatable system testing. For example, VIAVI has shown how a cognitive AI based solution to maximise performance across frequency bands can be tested.
Paul Harris, Principal Wireless Architect, CTO Office at VIAVI Solutions said that Viavi’s leadership of the Data for AI (D4AI) working group within the AI-RAN Alliance will help to set guidelines and frameworks for synthetic data storage, collection, interoperability and sharing.
And, he added, the company is exploring potential AI-native air interface technologies, including neural receivers, through research collaborations with industry partners. The goal is to understand the gains that can be realistically achieved through using AI at the air interface and RAN.
